(a note before the play begins)
Robert King, Jr. is a playwright, director, singer, actor, and mental health advocate. Raised in Victoria, Texas, he found his creative voice in Austin before building his platform in Atlanta.
In 2017, inspired by the life and legacy of Donny Hathaway, Robert created The Voices of Donny Hathaway — a show born out of his own mental health journey that struck a chord far beyond what he expected, and has since drawn invitations to be staged at theaters across the country.
Mental health advocacy runs through everything he makes. Through panels, plays, poetry, and music, Robert works to open up conversation around healing, especially in communities where the subject still carries stigma.
After a season of reflection back home in Texas, Robert returned to Atlanta with a clearer sense of purpose: writing stories that help people face their struggles instead of avoiding them. That includes his newest work exploring the highs and lows couples navigate together — the foundation King Productions is now built on.
